Preschool Camps & Half-Day Programs in St. Louis

A great preschool camp is not a shortened version of a big-kid camp. It's a different animal entirely, and the questions you should ask are different too.

What a good preschool camp looks like

Sessions run two to four hours, usually 9am–noon or 1pm–4pm, two to five days a week. The day is built from short rotating blocks: circle time, a themed craft, outdoor play, a snack, story time, free choice. Staff ratios should be 1:6 or better for threes and fours.

Themes are simple and concrete — dinosaurs, farm animals, water play, superheroes, colors and shapes. Anything more elaborate is usually marketing aimed at parents rather than programming aimed at kids.

The questions that actually matter

1. Potty training policy. Many programs require it. Many others don't. Ask directly, first.
2. Ratio and staff training. Who is in the room, and are they early-childhood trained?
3. Separation support. What's the plan for a child who cries at drop-off on day one?
4. Nap or quiet time. For threes, a half day without rest can be rough by Thursday.
5. Allergy and snack handling. Get specifics, not reassurances.
6. What's the outdoor plan for a 98-degree week?

Preschools and early childhood centers, church programs, parks departments, nature centers, gymnastics and dance studios, and children's museums all run half-day summer sessions. Community-based programs in North and South County are usually the most affordable; specialty studios in West County and Mid County run higher.
