St. Louis Summer Festivals Worth Taking the Kids To
Festival season runs May through October across the region. Here's how to pick family-friendly ones and survive them with small kids.
From neighborhood block parties to multi-day riverfront events, the St. Louis region runs festivals nearly every weekend from May through October.
What makes a festival actually family-friendly
Not every festival with a bounce house is built for kids. Look for:
- A dedicated kids' zone or activity tent
- Daytime hours, not just an evening beer garden
- Stroller-navigable grounds and real shade
- Free or low admission for children
- Restrooms and changing facilities that exist and are findable
The rhythm of the season
May–June — neighborhood and parish festivals, art fairs, early music events. July — the biggest civic celebrations and fireworks weekends. August — cultural and heritage festivals, back-to-school community events. September–October — harvest festivals, pumpkin patches, Oktoberfest-style events and fall street fairs.
Going with small kids: a short survival plan
- Arrive at opening. The first ninety minutes are calmer, cooler and easier to park for.
- Park intentionally. Pay for the closer lot. You'll be carrying someone on the way back.
- Pick two things. Trying to see everything is how a good day turns into a meltdown.
- Pack water and snacks. Festival food lines with a hungry four-year-old are a bad combination.
- Set a departure time before you go in — and leave while everyone's still happy.
- Photograph your kid at the entrance. If you get separated, you have exactly what today's outfit looks like.
Multi-day and recurring festivals
Many of the region's festivals run across a weekend or repeat weekly through a season. When you're browsing listings, check the full date range rather than just the first day — Sunday afternoons are frequently the calmest and most kid-oriented.
