St. Louis has quietly become a strong STEM town for kids. Between university outreach programs, maker spaces, science centers and independent robotics academies, there are dozens of options across the region every summer and school year.
Match the program to the age, not the buzzword
Ages 5–7 should be mostly physical: simple machines, magnets, bridge building, screen-free logic games and beginner block coding in short bursts. If a camp for six-year-olds is four hours of laptop time, keep looking.
Ages 8–11 are the sweet spot for block-based coding (Scratch), beginner robotics kits, 3D printing and game design. Look for programs where kids finish the week with something they built and can demo at home.
Ages 12–15 can handle real text-based languages — Python, JavaScript, Arduino, competitive robotics and CAD. At this age, ask about the instructor's actual background.
Five questions that separate good from mediocre
- What is the camper-to-instructor ratio? (Under 10:1 for hands-on builds.)
- Do kids take a project home, physical or digital?
- How much of each day is screen time versus building?
- Are the kits provided, or is there a hidden materials fee?
- Is there a beginner track, or will a brand-new kid be lost by Tuesday?
What it typically costs
Most STEM camps in the metro run $300–$550 per week for full-day, and $175–$300 for half-day. University-run programs sit at the higher end but often include lab access you can't get anywhere else. Library and parks-department coding clubs are frequently free — an excellent way to test interest before spending real money.
Year-round options, not just summer
Plenty of STEM programming runs during the school year as after-school enrichment or Saturday workshops. These are easier to get into, cheaper per hour, and let kids build skills continuously instead of forgetting everything between Julys.
