Youth Sports Clinics & Leagues Across St. Louis
Soccer, baseball, volleyball, flag football and more — how St. Louis youth sports seasons work and when to sign up so you don't miss the window.
Youth sports in St. Louis run on a calendar most new parents learn the hard way: by missing it. Here's how the year actually works across the city, county and metro east.
The St. Louis youth sports calendar
- Spring (Mar–May) — soccer, baseball, softball, track. Registration opens in January.
- Summer (Jun–Aug) — skills clinics, swim teams, camp-format intensives. Registration opens in March.
- Fall (Sep–Nov) — soccer, flag football, volleyball, cross country. Registration opens in June and closes fast.
- Winter (Dec–Feb) — basketball, wrestling, indoor soccer, gymnastics. Registration opens in September.
The pattern: sign up roughly two to three months before the season starts.
Clinic versus league — pick deliberately
A clinic is short, skills-focused and low-commitment. It's perfect for trying a sport, sharpening one skill, or filling a school break. A league means a season of weekly practices plus games, team obligations and a real time commitment from the whole family.
If your child has never played the sport, do a clinic first. It costs a fraction of a season and saves you from a twelve-week commitment to something they don't enjoy.
Recreational, select and academy
- Recreational — parks departments, YMCAs, parish leagues. Everyone plays, cost is low, travel is minimal.
- Select / club — tryout-based, more practices, regional travel, meaningfully higher cost.
- Academy / training — year-round skill development, often alongside a league.
Most kids under ten are best served by recreational play. Specializing early is strongly associated with burnout and overuse injuries, and it rarely produces the advantage families hope for.
Costs across the metro
Recreational seasons generally run $60–$175. Club and select programs range from $500 to well over $2,000 once uniforms, tournaments and travel are counted. Clinics usually land between $40 and $150.
